CWS Medical Cases

CWS runs a sponsorship program to help cover the cost of medical care our rescued dogs need — from antibiotics for infections to major surgeries that let them live free of pain. The past few years have made even feeding the dogs a struggle, but some of these cases will deteriorate if we don't act now, while time is still on their side.

8 dogs currently need pressing medical attention

Every case, in their own words.

Prince

Prince

Urgent
Needs $1,000 USD — treatment, checkups, neutering, teeth cleaning & surgery
  • Enucleation (possible)

Prince was shot in the head, losing sight in his right eye and leaving limited sight in his left. His eye needs constant monitoring — if it becomes inflamed and painful, he may need enucleation surgery.

Massa

Massa

Fully Recovered$2,200 Fully Covered
Needed: TPLO, metal plate removal, 12 physio sessions
  • TPLO
  • Metal Plate Removal
  • Physiotherapy

Massa was found with her ears cut off and a broken leg, and underwent reconstructive surgery two years ago. A recent vet visit found knee inflammation requiring TPLO surgery and removal of the metal plate from her earlier surgery.

Roosevelt

Roosevelt

Fully Recovered
1st surgery: $2,000 USD · 2nd surgery (neutering & pin removal): $400 USD
  • TTT
  • Sulcoplasty
  • Capsulorrhaphy
  • DFO
  • Neutering

After three and a half years at the shelter — during which we believed Roosevelt was sterilized — we noticed behaviors typical of an unsterilized male dog. A thorough check-up and ultrasound revealed both testicles were still intact internally, which is why earlier exams missed it. His first surgery was on Feb 14, 2023, second on Feb 21, 2024; a planned third surgery was ultimately not needed.

Ronald

Ronald

Fully Recovered$700 Fully Covered
Needed: surgery, medication & checkups
  • Patellar Luxation Surgery

Ronald appears to have inherited the same condition his mother had. Born at the shelter alongside his siblings, his brother Elton recently underwent the same surgery and is healing well in his foster home — we hoped the same could be done for Ronald soon.

Ringo

Ringo

Fully Recovered — Adopted in Canada
Needed: $650 + $400 USD for two surgeries, meds & checkups · Teeth cleaning: $250 (pending)
  • Patellar Luxation — done
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Teeth Cleaning

Ringo started limping, and an X-ray revealed Patella Luxation. His first surgery was Nov 8, 2023, followed by a second reconstructive surgery a month later after he hurt himself during recovery. The vet also recommended teeth cleaning to prevent gum infection. Ringo has since found his forever home in Canada.

What these terms actually mean.

We've done our best to explain the medical language you'll see in these cases, in plain terms.

Enucleation
Surgical removal of the entire eye and its contents, while preserving the surrounding eye socket structures.
DFO (Distal Femoral Osteotomy)
A technique that realigns the quadriceps mechanism by correcting a femoral deformity.
TPLO
Tibial-Plateau-Leveling Osteotomy — surgery that stabilizes the knee joint after a cruciate ligament rupture.
DPO (Double Pelvic Osteotomy)
Performed on dogs with hip subluxation caused by joint laxity or a steep hip socket angle.
Luxating Patella
When a dog's kneecap shifts out of its normal groove in the thighbone.
Castration
The common term for neutering — surgical removal of both testicles to sterilize a male dog.
Ovariohysterectomy
The medical term for spaying — surgical removal of a female dog's ovaries and uterus.
Hydrotherapy
Physiotherapy exercises performed in water under a trained hydrotherapist's supervision.
Ischial Fracture
A pelvic fracture, typically from a vehicle accident, that often causes severe lameness in the hind legs.
Physiotherapy
Techniques that help a dog regain use of their limbs, reduce pain, and improve mobility — including hydrotherapy and electrostimulation.
Giardia
A single-celled intestinal parasite, most common in puppies, contracted through contaminated water or feces.
Coxo-Femoral Joint
The ball-and-socket hip joint, formed by the femoral head and the pelvis.
FHO
Femoral Head Ostectomy — orthopedic surgery that removes hip pain and restores mobility by removing the damaged femoral head and neck.
Hydrotherapist
A professional who uses water-based treatment for conditions like arthritis or partial paralysis.
Hip Dysplasia
A malformation of the hip's ball and socket, causing them to grind instead of moving smoothly.
Bilateral Hip Fracture
A fracture affecting both hips, usually from high-impact trauma, requiring FHO surgery to relieve pain.
Electrostimulation
Low-level electrical currents applied to a muscle group, often after significant muscle injury, atrophy, or surgery.
